BENGALURU:  Massive disparities still prevail in schools and colleges run by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP), reveals an audit. For instance, the Cleveland Town Corporation Girls High Schools has 140 students in one classroom while Gandhinagar Corporation School has just 35 students in the entire school!

This is just one of the findings that emerged from a 20-day audit conducted for the BBMP-Roshini project aimed at shoring up the teaching standards in the 154 BBMP run educational institutions. The audit aimed at finding the exact problems faced and was carried out last month by IT firm Tech Avant-Grade.

Roshini Kumar, Chief Patron of Roshini Social Schooling told TNIE that the schools would be developed holistically through a 360-degree development for students.  “One of the reasons we had this audit done was to understand the intricacies of the systems in place. We wanted to be absolutely sure where investments need to be made.”

Another finding was the absolute lack of security in all of these institutions. “We saw garbage being dumped inside schools and open defecation taking place in some places,” he said. Ali Sait, CEO of Tech Avant-Garde, said that it was heartening to see that nearly 65% of the students were girls.

As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility Schemes, Tech Avant-Garde and Microsoft plan to spend between D500 crore and D600 crore over a two-and-a-half year period to transform these schools.  The survey helped us understand that the most attention needs to be paid to improving the communication skills of the teaching staff, Sait added. A big positive was that most BBMP teachers were enthusiastic about upgrading their skills. “Even now, they go out of their way to use different teaching aids to help their students,” the audit revealed.
