BHUBANESWAR: The number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds at Capital Hospital will be increased from 16 to 40, following a decision taken at a meeting of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS) held on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi.

The MP reviewed the functioning of Samiti and sought detailed updates on long-pending issues affecting the hospital, which caters to thousands of patients from Bhubaneswar and adjoining areas every day.

In view of the growing patient load, the decision to augment ICU bed capacity was taken, officials said.

To expedite the process, Sarangi also discussed the matter over the phone with Health minister Mukesh Mahaling and Health secretary Aswathy S. The minister assured that long-standing issues at Capital Hospital would be addressed and efforts would be made to improve the quality of healthcare services.

The RKS also decided to initiate steps to regularise the services of around 150 Class IV employees who have been working on a contractual basis at the hospital for several years. The MP raised the issue during the meeting and assured that steps would be taken in this direction at the earliest.

Bhubaneswar Central MLA Ananta Narayan Jena, mayor Sulochana Das, RKS managing committee member Bimal Kumar Raul and senior officials of Capital Hospital were present at the meeting.
