ANGUL: The Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Talcher Fertilizers Limited (TFL) for safe and scientific disposal of fly ash generated from the latter’s upcoming coal gasification-based ammonia-urea project at Talcher.
Under the agreement, fly ash generated from the unit will be transported through a high concentration slurry disposal system and scientifically deposited at quarry no. IV of Jagannath open cast project of MCL. The quarry is located at Talcher.
According to MCL, the initiative aims to ensure environmentally sustainable ash management while facilitating scientific mine reclamation in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). TFL will procure coal from MCL mines at Talcher for coal gasification to produce urea. The slurry generated from the process will be evacuated to void coal mines.
The collaboration is expected to promote sustainable industrial practices, enable efficient utilisation of mine voids and strengthen responsible environmental management, said a release by the MCL. The initiative reinforces MCL’s commitment towards adopting eco-friendly solutions and contributing to the nation’s sustainable development goals, it added.
The MoU was signed by general manager (project & planning), MCL PK Mishra and managing director, TFL Vivek Srivastava.
