BHUBANESWAR: Industries, Skill Development and Technical Education minister Sampad Chandra Swain has urged Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (FARD) minister Gokulananda Mallik to establish a modern hygienic fish market in his Assembly constituency to benefit fishermen, traders and consumers in the region.
In a letter to Mallik, Swain said Paradip is known for its abundant marine fish resources. A large section of the local population depends on fishing and fish trade for their livelihood. However, the condition of the existing fish markets in Paradip is reported to be poor, with inadequate infrastructure and lack of proper sanitation facilities.
The absence of appropriate storage systems often leads to deterioration in the quality of fish, creating difficulties for both traders and consumers.
Swain proposed the establishment of a modern hygienic fish market equipped with improved infrastructure, proper sanitation arrangements, ice-based preservation systems and cold storage facilities.
As per the proposal, the modern market would help maintain hygiene standards, reduce environmental pollution and ensure the availability of fresh and safe fish for consumers. It is also expected to bring improvement to the fish trade in the Paradip region.
