BHUBANESWAR: Police on Sunday arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly forcing his pregnant wife to abort their child.
The accused Soumya Ranjan Ransingh of Gandamunda was a driver by profession. As per police, he was mentally and physically harassing his wife for the last few months.
The woman alleged Ransingh was having an illicit affair for which he was torturing her. She claimed he even attempted to kill her on September 3 by trying to force her to consume phenyl. She alleged he also mortgaged her gold and silver ornaments to avail a loan.
The victim claimed that on September 21, he took her to a clinic in Ashok Nagar and compelled her to give her consent for abortion. Her family members then lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police. Basing on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. “Ransingh was arrested and all medical documents related to the abortion of the woman were seized. The accused has criminal antecedents and was earlier booked in nine cases by different police stations in the city,” said a police officer.
