CHENNAI: Chennai’s film industry is set for an unparalled growth in the next few years. More skilled talent will be needed in future with large MNCs coming into film production.

It is to meet this need of the hour that the SRM Sivaji Ganesan Film and Television Institute (SRM SGFTI) has been founded in Chennai. An MOU was signed between Ramkumar Ganesan, Sivaji’s son and MD, Sivaji Productions, and TR Pachaimuthu, Chairman, SRM Arts and Science College.

According to D Balaji, current co-ordinator of the Dept. of Communications, who will be heading the SRM SGFTI, “Ramkumar Ganesan came to a college function last year when our chairman mentioned his desire for a film institute. Ramkumar agreed immediately to give his father’s name to the institute and offer all guidance, curriculum details and visiting guest faculty from the film industry,” beams Ramkumar, “We are happy to see our father’s legacy live on with SRM’s excellent academic record and facilities.” State-of-the-art projection rooms, facilities and equipment have been added. The unique features will a Bachelor of Film Technology and a three degree course, a first in India. Currently only diploma courses ( DFTs) exist in the country.

The degree courses include cinematography, editing, sound, art direction, graphics and animation and film production and marketing. A unique one-year diploma in acting is also in the plan.

The basic eligibility is a plus two, and applications are on for the courses beginning in June 2009.

A fitting tribute to the great thespian indeed.
