CHENNAI: If you switch on your television set, you can find out how animation plays an enormous role from advertisements and films to mobile phones and video games.
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MS University) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the global leader in hi-end animation and multimedia training, Arena Animation.
They jointly offer a BSc degree in Multimedia and Animation. The program will be available from this academic year across the country at select Arena Animation centres. Arena will follow the SILM (Students Integrated Learning Model) for the training. It will be a three-year MSU course, with 90 credits as per university norms.
Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, R T Sabapathy Mohan, Vice Chancellor, MS University, said, "This course provides an excellent opportunity to all talented and creative youth for their development."
He pointed out that the syllabus is jointly decided by MU and Aptech. Any student, upon completion of graduation, can become a digital animator. The course curriculum will include all modules from Arena Animation's flagship program – Arena Animation Academy Specialist Program (AAASP), and four mandatory modules from MS University- English Language, an elective second language, and two papers of soft skills.
Ninad Karpe, CEO and MD, Aptech Limited said, "The animation industry is growing. It is not specific to films, it pervades all industries like television, mobile and everything."
Ninad pointed out the FICCI-KPMG report that says the estimated size of the Indian animation industry is around Rs 1,740 crore and is expected to reach Rs 3,900 crore by 2013. He also said Hollywood films are outsourced to India and that would keep increasing.
Those who have completed their higher secondary examinations are eligible to apply and the course fee is about Rs 1.2 to 2 lakh depending on the city.
