CHENNAI: Tired and thirsty after a long day, I stopped at the Bombay Lassi Shop behind Devi Paradise theatre for it’s famous Lassi. Little did I know I was right on time for some piping hot and glistening Jalebis as well. All my well-laid plans to lose weight just flew out of the window when I found myself drooling over the syrupy and mouth-watering Jalebis. The crispiness was just right and I lavished praise on them mentally, as I had syrup drenched lips reminding me of their sweetness. Divine! is the word After having one too many, I had to force myself to leave for Choolaimedu. I was picking up my sister there when she suggested we grab a bite. I was still Jalebi-hungry and lo behold, there it was - a shop that sells piping hot Jalebis. In an open space, just right outside Chitra Towers, is Haniffa tea stall. He is more famous for his samosas and chats than Jalebis. As soon as I tasted one I knew why - it was too sweet and just warm. Though freshly made, the ones he sells are not made in front of you. The batter is made and fried in his house and then sold at the stall.

Shree Mithai’s three-storey building at Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar may be intimidating but it shouldn’t stop you from making a quick stop for their Jalebis. It’s once again made in their kitchen (somewhere on the second floor) but can be served hot and cold, depending on your choice. It still tastes fresh despite being reheated in a microwave - the tangy taste just about right.

So what are you waiting for? Sugary, syrupy, crisp Jalebis beckon!
