CHENNAI: A 31-year-old woman committed sucide as she was heart-broken over not getting married, but placed the blame on the cosmetic surgery that she had undergone eight months ago.
In her suicide note addressed to the City Police Commissioner, R Valarmathi, who was found hanging at her house in Vyasarpadi on Sunday, said that the corrective jaw surgery performed at the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital had left her with impaired vision and that was coming in the way of finding a groom. She also demanded action against the doctors who performed the surgery.
However, a doctor in the hospital said: “She underwent corrective jaw surgery in April or May as her teeth were protruding. “Post-surgery, she was fine and had no problems with her vision.” He said Valarmathi had been regularly visiting the hospital for check-ups till about a month ago and had not mentioned any problem with her eyesight. She could have taken the extreme step due to personal or psychological problems.
People undergo corrective facial surgery to look better. When a cosmetic operation does not get translated into marriage, it could lead to depression. A corrective jaw surgery would never affect vision, he added. Echoing his views, Dr B C Roy Award winner and noted maxillofacial surgeon Dr S M Balaji said: “I have never come across a regular facial surgery leading to loss of vision.” Only in accident victims who suffer injury on the facial bones, retrobulbar haemorrhage happens, he said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, MKB Nagar, K Murali told Express that the body had been sent for post-mortem and a case had been booked under Section 174 (suspicious death). “I do not want to point fingers at anybody at this stage,” he said.
