CHENNAI: City police commissioner K Radhakrishnan was awarded the President’s police medal for distinguished service on Republic Day.
He took charge as Chennai city police commissioner at a time when people had started losing faith in the police, following the violent incidents at Dr Ambedkar Law college. He immediately launched a crackdown and arrested students belonging to both Dalit and caste Hindu groups.
A member of the 1983 IPS batch, he won two national and three international awards.
Appreciating his service in handling caste violence, communal violence/religious terrorism, Left wing extremism, Tamil chauvinism and the dacoit menace from Andhra Pradesh, the government had awarded him with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medal for outstanding devotion to duty in 1995, and President of India’s police medal for meritorious service in 1999. His international awards include the Queen’s award from UK in 2002 for women police empowerment, community policing award in 2002 from the international association of chiefs of police, USA, and Queen’s award again in 2004.
