CHENNAI: The transformation from a relation-based to a contract-based society is the root cause for modernity, S Gurumurthy, columnist, said recently. He was participating in a seminar conducted by the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama on ‘Spirituality in Corporate Governance.’ Though we are still a highly spiritualised society in India where everything, including money, is sacred, we are also simultaneously catching up with the contract-based model of economic, social and constitutional structure.

The other was the Kalinga war, where after all the victory and bloodshed, Ashoka spoke the same way as Arjuna did before the war. “That was where we lost our sense of power,” he said. If the world respects India today it is because we are now an economic, military and atomic power. “Kshatriyata is important for a nation,” he said.

N Ravichandran, Director, IIM, Indore, said India was blindly copying the American model of growth with its focus on performance rather than purpose. Swami Bodhamayananda of the Math, recalled the vision for India that Swami Vivekananda had over a century ago.
