CHENNAI: While the city police suspect the skull that emerged from nowhere on the roadside on Sunday as that belonging to jewellery broker Suresh Kumar, who was killed on June 6, the fact remains that the case has still not been cracked like a few other murders, some of them definitely for gain.

One such case that has remained in the realm of mystery for seven years is a jewellery shop owner’s murder in Vellore. Another case in which the city police has been unable to make any breakthrough so far is the murder of former chief of Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited, S Saravanan, along with his wife and maid, in Ashok Nagar, near the police training college, in December last year.

Describing jewellery shop owner Srinivasan’s killing, Vellore Congress MLA Gnanasekaran, who had raised the issue of unsolved murders in the Assembly a couple of days back, said: “Two men armed with guns landed at the shop near the Vellore North police station, shot down Srinivasan and watchman Thirumalai around 8.40 pm and then killed a school teacher Ramu before escaping on the latter’s bike.”

In fact, Gnanasekaran has been raising the issue for the past six years in the Assembly and also submitted a petition to senior police officers in Chennai, but to no avail. In 2005, the police submitted a reference chargesheet to the Magistrate Court in Vellore, requesting permission to drop the case as they couldn’t make any headway, Gnanasekaran said. The magistrate rejected the plea and asked the police to continue the investigations.

In fact, Vellore has seen three Superintendents of Police after the murder, Srinivasan of Vellore said.

Moreover, in the last six months, 44 murders have occurred, including that of a government employee in the Block Development Office on July 19. Even the alleged contract killers, who murdered the PRO of Christian Medical College three months ago have not been tracked, Gnanasekaran said.

Saravanan’s murder too is intriguing for the killers had entered his bungalow and fatally attacked his wife Kasthuri and a maidservant Anbasari. Though Saravanan had high level connections, the case remains unsolved.
