CHENNAI: After the sensational murder of life convict ‘Welding’ Kumar inside the Central jail at Puzhal on June 10, the focus is now on strengthening perimeter security and training guards in effective frisking at the entrance.

“We are awaiting the inquiry report of the revenue divisional officer into the security lapses that led to the murder. We will go into all the data and take suitable measures,” Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) K R Shyam Sundar told Express on Saturday.

Listing out the plans, he said perimeter security (the area immediately inside the boundary) of the 212-acre prison would be strengthened by installing electronic gadgets, including infra-red or ultra-violet devices, if necessary.

He said security guards would be given professional training on how to check visitors by more effective frisking and alertness, he said.

The DGP added that the local police would be requested to maintain a vigil on roads adjoining the prison to prevent objects from being thrown into the premises.

Pointing out that CCTVs had been placed inside the prison last month, he said cell phone jammers would be installed.

Public telephone facility would also be set up on the lines of prisons in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

“Where there is demand, there will be supply,” he said when queried about the alleged warden-prisoner nexus in supplying materials like cell phones, cigarette etc to the inmates. Strict departmental action would be taken against officials. The intelligence apparatus would also be strengthened, he added.
