CHENNAI: This year, government colleges have seen an healthy increase in the number of application forms sold for MBBS and BDS. Around 3,500 more application forms for MBBS and BDS were sold this year, and the total figure on Wednesday (the last day the forms were available and for submission) stood at over 15,500. Only 12,732 forms were sold last year.

“We have received 14,820 completed applications. Of these, 14,091 are in the general category, 393 in the special categories, 118 from the sports category and 118 that were downloaded online,’’ said an official at the Directorate of Medical Education. A total of 1,483 seats are available for students in the State and 262 in the all-India quota.

As of now only 15 medical colleges are in the offing. Director of Medical Education Dr S Vinayagam said that so far the Medical Council of India had not granted approval for the two new government medical colleges in Thiruvarur and Villupuram, he said.
