CHENNAI: The Class X CBSE students in the city battled easily their first major exam of Social Science on Wednesday.

About 15, 565 regular students and 49 private students appeared for the exam from 182 schools and 72 centres throughout Tamil Nadu.

The paper was easy, remarked a smiling Vandana from the Shrine Velankanni School, while a student from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gill Nagar, told her parent, ``It was way easier than what I had expected.”

A student from the Chatrapathi Shivaji DAV School remarked that thankfully the question paper was easier than the loads of samples papers he had practised. Sumati, a senior teacher of Social Science at the Modern Senior Secondary School at Nanganallur, told Express that though the paper was easier than last year, the picture identification question was a little tough. “The map was very easy and I think all students could have easily attempted the entire paper,’’ she said.

Jayalakshmi, a Class X teacher at the school, added that the students had finished on time with enough time to revise the answer sheet also. A Social Science teacher of KV noted that all questions were straight from the NCERT book. Last year, the history portion had tricky questions and all students knew the answer but their time slipped away in thinking how to attempt them. But this year, the questions were more direct and were very easy to tackle, she said.

Malathy Srinivasan, Principal,  Devi Academy Senior Secondary School, said that since the first exam had been Social Science, the children could heave a sigh of relief and look forward to other hurdle subjects like Maths and Science. It was yet again an encouraging beginning for students since students of Class X write Board exams for the first time. “Even weak students can perform well in this paper,’’ she said.  “Class X students generally lose marks by committing silly mistakes. All the three CBSE papers till now have been a smooth sail,’’ she informed.

Varsha Vaidyanathan, whose son studies at the Chettinad Vidyashram, said that her son was very tensed before the exam especially because they had recently come down from abroad and had to struggle with the new syllabus. But to find her son so relaxed after the exam was a huge comfort, she said.

N Nagaraju, Regional Officer, Chennai, told The New Indian Express that the exams were conducted without any problem throughout the state and no case of cheating had been reported. The exams, which would be over by March 30, had started with ancillary subjects, he said.
