CHENNAI: An eye for art is but natural for these sisters. Having grown up amidst creative minds at their best, at the Cholamandal Artists Village, G Latha and G Priya got plenty of chances to get inspired.

And to add to this, the ability to innovate also flowed in from their late father and eminent graphic artist, KS Gopal. It’s in his memory that these young women have put up their latest exhibition, Home Coming. While the exhibition is unique for all these reasons, there’s one more that will make this duo remember this exhibition for life. “This is the first time we’re exhibiting our works together. In memory of father, it feels perfect, just what he’d like,” they beam.

For Latha, the human element and relationships come as the biggest inspiration. She paints figuratives, with her own element of realism. “I first began with painting Ganeshas, then moved on to flowers and now am very attached to figuratives. I have always liked figuratives; people and relationships are what I dominantly paint.” Her works comprise portraits that revolve around friendship, motherhood and sisterhood.

“Most of my subjects are women as I can connect with them better,” she says, adding that there are yet two men in her series of paintings, in order to complete the cycle.

Whatever mood she’s in, Priya owes all of them to nature and feels that it plays an important role in determining the way one feels. Her abstracts are titled under three heads - seasons, elements and mindscapes. Her paintings are a blend of natural colour field and abstract expressionism.

Greens, blues and oranges are splashed across fine textures in her works. “When you are amidst rich natural beauty, everything that catches your eye is an inspiration. Growing up in Cholamandalam has been a beautiful learning process.

My fascination to nature keeps me going and that’s how I understand art,” says a chirpy Priya.

A total of 30 works by the sisters have been exhibited at Home Coming. The exhibition at Gallery Sri Parvathi, 28/160, Eldams Road, was inaugurated by the city’s senior artists on Thursday evening.

It is on till March 31.
