CHENNAI: Graphic arts in Slovakia have a long standing history, replete with works from Albin Beunovsky, Ernest Zmetak, Orest Dubay, Mikulas Galanda and the likes. And as an effort to showcase the cultural and artistic repertoire of the country, the Indo Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tamil Nadu exhibits a collection of such works at the Lalit Kala Akademi.

Gracing the walls are 109 pictures by 37 Slovakian artists.

Tatiana Fecikova, Consul, Embassy of The Slovak Republic, at the launch of the exhibition said, “The Slovakian Embassy is in Delhi. But the Chennai chamber is doing an amazing job. We organised film festivals the last two years and this year we thought of bringing the works of the big names of graphic arts from Slovakia..” The exhibition that was first presented in Indonesia and later in Taipei and Kuala Lumpur has now bedecked the walls of the Lalit Kala Akademi in Chennai before it moves to New Delhi and Kolkata, where it will be displayed at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts and the Rabindranath Tagore Centre respectively.

On display is an assemblage of works by both the classical and the more contemporary artists, emanating an air of rational poetic feelings and geometric abstraction at the same time. Adding to the traditional graphic techniques like etching, offset printing and photogravure are also computer generated graphics, opening the possibility of novel expressions. The exhibition is on until today at The Lalit Kala Akademi, Greams Road.
