Madras Terrace House goes green
ENVIRONMENT awareness week for Chennai might technically be over, but at the one at The Madras Terrace, house hosted by Kaveri Lalchand, deep concern for environmental factors are apparent everywhere from the solar water heater to the energy saving CFL bulbs. Abstract art from Kerala and photography by amateur photographers from the Madras Christian College campus is also part of the display. The expressive arts are also encouraged. On sale were many products made from recycled materials such as clothing, floor mats, and wallets.
Table mats, runners, trays and boxes made out of banana fibre and other agro waste, from Udbhava, organic food grain from Re Store, natural soaps from Essence of the Earth, bags and footwear made from recycled plastic bags from Conserve India, totes and laptop sleeves recycled from vinyl hoardings from Lets, recycled plastic baskets from Street Trust, recycled handmade stationery, notebooks and folders from Auroville and organic breads, muffins, pastas, juices and cheeses from Eco Nut form a part of the display.
Food is also sold from an environmental standpoint, being a vegetarian café with many organic foods. Added to its line-up of tit-bits is a range of organic pastas sauted in the open kitchen to your delight. The backyard is out on display too, with in-house items from Kaveri Lalchand‘s own line, a series in off-whites to keep up with the organic look and feel. More events at the Madras Terrace house to bring environmentalism to the public will take place till June 28. Coming up this Wednesday is a discussion of genetically modified foods including a screening of Mahesh Bhatt’s scathing documentary‚ Poison on the Platter. Apparel or food, whatever your passion, here’s your chance to do it all, eco-friendly and guilt free.
