CHENNAI: A green hospital building built along international standards to give international-level care to Indian patients: this is what Miot Hospitals has proposed for the future.

On Thursday, Miot laid the foundation stone for a new hospital within the premises: Miot Hospitals International which will comprise three basement levels plus eight storeys and serve as a centre for several specialties.

“Miot International will be a 45-bedded hospital and have 12 operation theatres. Medical and surgical oncology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and organ transplant surgery will all take place there. Other specialties such as cardiology and neurology will also be housed in the building,’’ said managing director of Miot Dr P V A Mohandas.

Miot claims that this is the first hospital building in the country that will be a ‘green building.’ Explaining this, Dr Mohandas said that the building would have energy efficient light fixtures that turned off automatically when there was no one in the room. Also, wastewater would be recycled and used for landscaping and other purposes. Also, solar panels would be used for hot water and all materials for the construction were being sourced from nearby locations.

“Since we use radioactive materials in some of our diagnostics and treatment, the waste generating has to be treated very carefully. It takes three months to treat this hazardous waste and ensure it is not toxic anymore before disposing of it,’’ said Dr Prithivi Mohandas, director of hip arthroplasty at the hospital.

Also, in order to reduce hospital-based infections, Miot will install a device that will give bacteria-free air to the entire hospital thereby keeping patients healthier, Dr Mohandas said. The hospital will cover 6.5 lakh sq ft and is being built at a cost of around Rs 250 crore.

US Consul General for Chennai Andrew Simkin was the chief guest.
