CHENNAI: It resembled a wrestling ring with a rectangular grass mat on the floor, surrounded by a mesh that went up to eight feet high.
But those inside it were a handful of school kids passing a ball using a gadget that could be easily worn on the hands. Squap, as the gadget is called, opened and closed, like the mouth of a frog to release and catch the ball respectively.
An improvised version of the ‘Catch and Throw’ game, Squap is a popular sport across Europe. The celebrated kids TV channel, Nick India, has now brought it to India, along with Simba Dickie Group, a major toy company. Many promotional activities to popularise this new game are being conducted across the country. Those who were present at the Ampa Skywalk Mall, where the Squap Championship was held, saw many keen participants, who joined in irrespective of their age.
Following a group of boys, six women assembled inside the web to test-play the game. Popular MTV VJ Gaelyn, played host for the event and also joined the players in the game.
Two women stood till the end to win the game. The winners were given the Squap gadget as gifts.
Squap is a complete leisure game and follows no strict rules. There is no restriction of age and number of players, which makes it a prospective family activity too. Each piece of Squap is priced at Rs 699 and is available at all leading stores in the city.
