CHENNAI: Angadi Theru , a film on the plight of workers in Chennai's commercial hub Ranganathan Street, was awarded Best Film at the Eighth Chennai International Film Festival here on Thursday.
A cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each was presented to its director Vasanthabalan and producers Karunamurthy and Arun Pandiyan (not present at the event) by Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Napoleon.
Kalavani was judged second Best Film, while a Special Jury prize was awarded to actor Parthiban for his performance in the film Aayirathil Oruvan . The award for the best independent feature film was presented for the film Or Iravu .
Actor-minister Napoleon said he regretted that there were no such festivals in Chennai during his acting career.
"The PM has now permitted me to only complete the films I had earlier begun acting in and not act in new projects," he said.
The festival that began on December 15 ended on Thursday with the screening of the Spanish film Beautiful .
