CHENNAI: Around 50 people thronged the City Police Commissionerate on Friday and lodged a complaint against JBJ city developers for allegedly cheating them of crores of rupees after promising them land. The man at the centre of the controversy is I Justin Devadoss alias David, chairman and managing director of JBJ Group of companies, who was arrested by the Bangalore police in a similar case last month.

Justin Devadoss roped in film stars to advertise his investment scheme in the media and appointed executives to attract thousands of people in 91 centres in Chennai and other parts of the state, Bangalore in Karnataka and in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

“He promised us 10 per cent commission if we promoted the investment schemes among locals,” said Shalem, who worked as an executive for JBJ city developers.

“I purchased a piece of land in Arakonnam for Rs 2.5 lakh from the builders. Later when I went to the registrar’s office for checking the property details, I learnt that it was a ‘panchami’ land allocated to Dalits,” said S Santhilal. The complaint claimed officials in the revenue department and registration office operated hand-in-glove with Devadoss, who offers a ground between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.

The executives even arranged a tour for prospective buyers to the site. “Excited after seeing the site, we paid the amount. But after collecting the amount, the executives delayed registration of lands,” said a woman, who invested Rs 1.5 lakh to purchase a land in Uzhaippalar Nagar in Tiruvallur district.
