CHENNAI: The theme song for next month’s World Classical Tamil Conference will be special as it will feature three generations of singers, from T M Sounderarajan to Shruti Haasan, and will be a confluence of many music genres, Academy Award winning music composer A R Rahman, who has set the song to tune, said here on Saturday.
“Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkkum, which begins with Sounderarajan’s voice, will have classical, Sufi, folk and rap influences,” he said. More than 30 singers have lent their voice to the song. They include Carnatic vocalists Nithyashree Mahadevan, S Sowmya, Aruna Sairam, playback singers P Susheela, Benny Dayal, Shrinivas, Hariharan, and folk singer Chinna Ponnu, apart from rapper BlaaZe and Rahman himself.
“The song was set to tune after the lyrics were written by chief minister M Karunanidhi, and took two months to produce,” Rahman said, adding that he was diffident originally about how the song would turn out, as the lyrics contained complicated Tamil words.
“I hope the tune doesn’t overpower the lyrics,” he said, when a scribe asked if the CM’s lyrics would be prominent in the song.
“The song is being filmed by popular filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon, and I will feature in the video too,” Rahman added.
