CHENNAI: The architectural conservation of the 97-year-old Ripon Building, seat of the Chennai Corporation, would be completed by March next year, Mayor M Subramanian said.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the restoration work at the Ripon Building here on Thursday, Subramanian said, “The restoration work which is being carried out at a cost of Rs 7.7 crore from the funds made available under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will be completed by March next year.”

Besides the chambers of the Mayor, the commissioner and the department heads, the Council Hall would also be conserved. The ground floor would be converted into a museum depicting the historic journey of the city.

The civic body would also undertake the construction of a new administrative block on the premises at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore.

Arrangements for basement parking would also be made. The construction work for the multi-storied office building was expected to be completed in 10 months.
