It was a musically warm evening. Guests streaming into Summit, Taj Mount Road headed straight to the bar for a drink to refresh themselves. The slow strains of instrumental Sufi music played in the background.
After a while, the guests who were suitably fed, began to get restless for the man of the evening to show up. And he did. Adil Hussaini humbly took the stage and gave a brief introduction of Sufi music before starting off on his first song, a lesser-known traditional number.
At this juncture, one thing must be said about Hussaini's voice. There are voices that are music to the ear. And there are voices that move your heart. But seldom do you chance upon a voice that simply amazes you with its wide repertory. Hussaini's voice belongs to the third category. A disciple of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Hussaini has been learning music since a tender age.
As the evening progressed, requests began pouring in from the members of the audience. Most of these requests were for Bollywood numbers composed by the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman.
Hussaini sang a wonderful medley of songs including Khwaja Mere Khwaja from Jodha Akbar, Piya Haji Ali from Fiza, Tere Naina from My Name Is Khan and Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji from Ishqiya. He also rendered a wonderful medley of Bollywood numbers from the yesteryears.
The guests had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and were seen clapping to the tunes of the songs.
