HUNDREDS of women thronged the North Mada Street on Saturday to show their creativity and talent in kolam art. The much-awaited Kolam contest as part of Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival saw over 250 participants from across the city.
The participants had to use their creativity and design a white powder kolam using 21 dots on a 4ft x4ft space. One of the participants, Kamaskshi Malini, who practised throughout the night said, “This is the first time I’m participating. Though my kolam was simple I had the joy of competing with others.” Among other participants was a 12-year-old school student Janani, who also participated in the last year contest. “She is too young but she wanted to participate and tried her best,” says her sister. The kolam contest drew a huge crowd who took photographs and video of the competition.
The air was charged with enthusiasm and excitement.
When all the participants were done with the drawing, the whole stretch of North Mada Street looked divine; a threshold to an auspicious event.
