CHENNAI: The Guild of Service (Central) Bala Vihar Special School will soon start a sheltered workshop to prepare its students for working in a professional environment.
Dr Lalitha Natraj, honorary joint secretary of the school, said that the workshop would also impart vocational training to the students. She was speaking at the annual day celebrations of the school held on its Kilpauk premises on Tuesday.
In her address, chief guest of the event Grace V Browning, chairperson and director of the Krupa Charitable Trust, promised the Trust’s support in imparting vocational training to students of the special school.
Recalling a saying that the only disability for a person was a bad attitude, she urged parents of the special children not give up their confidence on their child’s growth and abilities.
The school has 160 students of whom those less than five years of age are covered by an early intervention programme, while the older children are provided special education which includes speech, yoga and occupational therapy, said the school headmistress Ramani Nandakumar.
Students performed a drill and took part in the cultural events as part of the annual day celebrations. Prizes for winners of sports events held by the school were presented by the chief guest.
