CHENNAI: Senior musicians, the Bombay Sisters - Saroja and Lalitha have several awards to their credit. Some of the awards they have won include the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government, the Sangeetha Choodamani from the Krishna Gana Sabha, the Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award, the Sangeetha Kalanidhi from the Music Academy and the  Isai Perarignar Award from Tamil Isai. The two are still carrying forward the torch of traditional culture...

On the Margazhi festival:

We are happy that this season, there are more youngsters participating. We are glad that they have come into the realm of Carnatic music. It is a “golden age” for young musicians.

On Kutchery presentation:

The most important factor is cultivation of voice and good control over laya. There must be adherence to proper intonation and understanding. The meaning of kriti depends on the composer’s realisation. What is required is a deep understanding of the bhava, a methodical development of the raga with imagination and ‘Kalapramana Sudhdham’ in rendition.

On the mode of training:

Gurukula vasam may not be as feasible as it was in the past, because of the ‘Jet Age’. There can be no doubt that if a kriti is learnt from a notation or recorded music, one can only give one’s views of the raga. On the other hand, if it is learnt from a guru, the richness of the kriti or raga will emerge.

On efficacy of music:

Sangeetham is Agama, a divine heritage and one should try to expound and enjoy the exposition of the immortal classics of the great composers. We believe music is just the link created in the transmission of the feelings of the composer to the musician and in turn to the audience.

On contemporary musical values:

We are categorical that the values should not change and each word of the kriti should emanate from inbred spirituality of Bhakti, with expressive interpretation of the song rendered.
