CHENNAI: The SRM Tamil Peravai, a forum to foster the Tamil language, was inaugurated at the SRM University in Kattankulathur on Thursday.
The forum will conduct certificate courses in different fields in the language and also present scholar awards to 10 persons every year. "We wanted to institute an award on the lines of Sahithya Akademi and Jnanpith to acknowledge those who have contributed to the growth of Tamil language. This will be accomplished by the Tamil scholar awards to be given in 10 categories in all. Eight awards for creators in varied fields as poetry, short story, translation, research in Tamil will be distributed, containing Rs 1.5 lakh, apart from two special awards, containing Rs 2 Lakh and Rs 5 Lakh," said TR Pachamuthu, chancellor.
A Tholkappia School to propagate the work of Tamil scholar, Tholkappiar, will also be a part of this forum. The Tamil Peravai will also include a computing academy, certificate course for Arutchunaignar (Tamil archakar) and MA Tamil and M Phil Tamil virtual courses. Present at the inauguration was M Ponnavaikko, Provost: Chief Academic Officer, Tamil poet Erode Tamilanban and other Tamil scholars.
