CHENNAI: A 25-year-old history-sheeter, who had several cases of robbery and extortion against him, was hacked to death by a gang at Thuraipakkam on Saturday.

Two men were arrested in this connection, the police said and added that previous enmity is suspected to be cause for the murder. Acting on information that a man’s body with deep stab injuries had been found in Kannagi Nagar, DCP (Adyar) M C Sarangan, ACP (Thurai pakkam) K N Murali and other police officers visited the spot.

Upon investigation, the police identified the deceased as Ammabhai alias Suresh, of Kannagi Nagar. Ammabhai was booked under the Goondas Act in 2009, for his involvement in several cases of robbery and extortion and released three months ago, police sources said.  His associate Nithya (25), who had escaped with injuries during the attack, had also been arrested under the Goondas Act in a murder case and was out on bail.

A few days ago, both had tried to extort money from auto driver Manikandan and when he refused to pay, they assaulted him, the sources said. Manikandan informed his friends Vinod and Suresh and the duo decided to kill Ammabai and Nithya.

On Saturday night, the group attacked Ammabhai and Nithya with knives at Kannagi Nagar. The rowdies ran towards a TNHB quarters nearby but the gang followed them to the terrace and hacked the duo. Later they threw a profusely bleeding Ammabhai to the ground. He died on the spot, while Nithya,  managed to escape with grevious injuries.
