

CHENNAI: Celebrating Navy Week, the personnel of the INS Rana, a guided missile destroyer from the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy, demonstrated naval exercise off coast on Sunday for the family members of the armed forces.
The frontline warship, which is the second of the five Rajput class destroyers, arrived on a two-day visit at the Chennai port on Saturday from Vishakapatnam. Over 1,300 college and school students got a glimpse of the 5000-ton naval ship besides interacting with the personnel onboard.
The team Rana comprises 35 officers and 350 sailors. Personnel demonstrated rescue operations in the sea through a helicopter as the captain of the ship Mukul Asthana NM gave commands.
Signal firing between ships was displayed and the swiftness of patrol boats during an emergency was also demonstrated.
Joining INS Rana was INS Kulish and two others ships that belonged to the Talwar type.
INS Rana, which is fitted with an array of weapons and sensors, was commissioned at Poti, ex-USSR, 29 years ago on Feb 19, 1982.
The warship is designed for multi-dimensional combat operations and carries multi-engine helicopters.
It is equipped to face nuclear, chemical and biological warfare and can speed up to 30 nautical miles per hour.
