

CHENNAI: A science awareness programme for school children, organised by Punnagai children’s magazine, was held at Valluvar Kottam. The Children fest focused on educational needs, career guidelines and entertainment programmes for all age groups.
The programme was conducted to inculcate scientific temper among the younger generation. Dr Mylswamy Annadurai gave an inspiring speech and answered an array of questions fielded by the students. He said, “Awareness on science and technology should be created among students. They should ask questions on science to get the right answer. Though born and brought up in Tamil Nadu, scientists made their achievements elsewhere.”
Dr Selvamurthy, scientist and chief controller R&D, DRDO said, “India is emerging as strong economic power. Science and technology plays pivotal role in transferring India into strong economic power. India is also becoming knowledge power of the world.”
Dr Aiyamperumal, director, Periyar Science Centre, P Sivakumar, director, CVR & DS and Susi Thirugnanam, editor of Punnagai, Tamil magazine, spoke at the function. Live demonstration of effect of nitrozen liquid on rubber ball and banana was conducted for the students to create awareness.
The children fest combines kids entertainment like puppet show, digital games etc with edutainment like career counseling sessions and study techniques sessions.
Dr Mannar Jawahar, vice-chancellor of Anna University and Dr Ponnavaiko, senior advisor of SRM University and MVM Velmurugan, CEO of Velammal Educational Trust, addressed the students at the inaugural session.
A session on study techniques was addressed by Dr Kishore Kumar, senior principal of St John’s Residential School. Dr JN Reddy, director of Max Excel and Career counselor A Jayaprakash Gandhi addressed the students on career guidance. Punnagai Children’s Festival is promoted by an event management company headed by journalist Susi Thirugnanam.
