Our food decides the order in which our past karma manifests in the present. All the karma that we have generated till now is in a queue lined up in a certain order. As and when they manifest, we experience various states of mind, health and external circumstances in our lives. However, the order in the queue is not fixed. It is modified by the kind of food we eat and the activities we engage in. We can understand this through an example. Let us imagine  that we have bought some seeds  to be sown in our garden. We dig the soil and prepare a large area in the garden which is partly shaded by trees. Then we sow these seeds and water them every day. After a few days, we notice that a few of these seeds have already sprouted, while the others take much longer. When we sowed all of them at the same time, why didn’t they sprout together? The seeds that received the exact amount of water and sunlight required for their growth sprouted first and  others sprouted later. So, though all karma that we have generated is already inside us in the form of a seed, the order in which they germinate is dependent on the basic quality of food that is digested by us.

When we eat food that has slothful energy, it makes the past bad karma that has been generated by our own inertness sprout first. Then,  our life is beset by ailments, troubles and hurdles which become very difficult to resolve. People ignore us, behave indifferently to our suffering and often refuse to help us. We will be reduced to the plight of beseeching and begging people for their help and cooperation. Peace, prosperity and happiness withdraw from our hearts and home.

Whenever we choose to eat food that has the subtle component of aggressive energy, it makes past karmic reactions, produced by our own excessive expectations,  germinate immediately.

This tends to make us  mercenary, cynical and hard hearted. We are filled with mistrust and suspect people unnecessarily. Our relationships are fraught with animosity, rivalry and friction. We waste our energy in needless talk and overreact to trifles. We initiate or get pulled into arguments and fights frequently. We are engulfed by tension, stress and strain. Our life is filled with projects enthusiastically begun and left half done. We wonder as to why our life is full of trauma and upheavals without realizing that our food is the major cause for all this.

When we eat food that has the subtle component of purity, it calls all the past karmic reactions generated,  when we were in the mode of purity, to the head of the queue. Then, all the past karma produced by inertia and expectation, automatically recedes to the rear.

When this good karma sprouts, it brings an effortless flow of success, prosperity, good health, peace and happiness to us. If we are seekers on the spiritual path,  it enhances our inner purity, faith and pointed concentration in meditation.
