Popular diabetologist Dr V Mohan recently launched an Obesity and Weight Management Centre at their Gopalapuram campus. This is one among the very few centres in Tamil Nadu offering a comprehensive and personalised obesity and weight management solution, assured Dr Mohan. The clinic was inaugurated by actor S Ve Shekher.

Dr RM Anjana, Joint Managing Director, Dr Mohan’s Group of Institutions, said, “The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing rapidly,  probably due to a parallel increase in the prevalence of obesity. The CURES (Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiological Study)  conducted by the Madras Diabetes research Foundation (MDRF) showed that the overall prevalence of generalized obesity was 28.1 per cent and the prevalence of abdominal obesity was 46.6 per cent among adults in Chennai.

Another study conducted by MDRF among school children in Chennai called ORANGE (Obesity Reduction and Non Communicable disease Awareness through Group Education) showed that 20 per cent children and over 25 per cent of adolescents attending private schools were obese.

This translates to 13 million adults and 28 lakh children and adolescents with obesity, while 22 million adults have abdominal obesity in Tamil Nadu.”

Dr Y D Meher Prasad, Director of the new Centre, further added “Among 2, 15, 288 patients with type 2 diabetes registered at Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, 59 per cent are obese and almost 7 per cent patients have a BMI of ≥ 35, considered as “morbid obesity”, and this is more common in women than men.”

Dr V Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director, Dr Mohan’s Group of Institutions, also said, “With the obesity epidemic exploding in all age groups, we felt the need to open a separate centre which caters to people or patients who need to manage their weight to avoid other health complications.

In addition to a fully equipped gym, fitness trainer, dietitian, counselor and lifestyle consultant physician, a variety of health products will also be made available.

A special brown rice with lower glycemic index prepared and tested by our own centre is also being launched. This customized and holistic approach to obesity will be a unique service in Tamil Nadu.”
