Traffic on Millers Road came to a standstill for two hours following a clash between student-inmates of the Law College hostel and the crew of an MTC bus here on Saturday night.
While the city police were yet to ascertain as to what actually sparked off the clash, they said that around 7.45 pm, the crew of an MTC bus (route no 29C) came under attack from a couple of law college students. The students travelled by another bus (route no 22) from State Guest House and got off at the Millers Road bus stop. The 29C bus, which was tailing the bus no 22, came dangerously close to the students who alighted there. Angered, the students attacked the bus driver. While the driver managed to pull out the vehicle and drive off for about 100 metres, the students chased the bus and attacked the driver yet again. This was when members of the public roughed up the two students and handed them over to police.
As information reached the law college hostel, the inmates rushed to the scene armed with hockey sticks and cricket stumps. The policemen present there, however, chased them back to the hostel.
The students then squatted in front of the hostel bringing traffic on that stretch to a grinding halt.
Joint Commissioner of Police V A Ravikumar, DCP (Kilpauk) K Bhavaneeswari and ACPs R Krishnasamy (Ayyanavaram) and Rajaram (Kilpauk) were at the scene. Traffic returned to normal only around 9.30 pm. The cascading effect was felt on all other adjacent roads.
The injured MTC crew members were treated at a hospital. Police registered a case and are investigating.
