Knowing the language of lines

Minimal lines and vibrant colours are perhaps phrases any art lover would associate with the T Palur-born artist, Mark Rathinaraj. In his recent series —  I Saw I Share - V, a collection of 100 pen and ink works on stage performers, we see an example of just that.

If we rewind a little, a similar exhibition — Metamorphosis — but on a different subject was exhibited at the Focus Art Gallery in August, 2011. What’s interesting to note are the strong lines he uses to give his subject a concrete shape. Be it the yogic postures in his series ‘Metamorphosis’ or the stage performers in the current line of paintings, the human anatomy is beautifully brought out by Mark. “My strength lies in the lines and strokes I add to my works. It captures the motion and freezes it on canvas forever,” said Mark. The solid and stark lines in Mark’s works speak for themselves, they have the capacity to draw viewers in and make them delve deep into the painting rather than just catch a glimpse of it.

The colour palette has been chosen carefully to add vibrancy to the series. The bright hues of red, green and yellow bring out the true spirit of a performer and does justice to the forms of dance brought to life by the artist. “These paintings are inspired by the performances I have seen over the years. There’s nothing imaginary here, it’s all real. It’s just that I have treated these dance routines and performances in my own way,” adds Mark.

Known for being realistic and experimental, this time, Mark has written a few lines which are also on display. Talking about the poem, which is also on display, Mark says, “Well, I’m not a poet and I’m not trying to be one. I have tried giving my inner voice an expression.”

The exhibition – I Saw I Share - V – is on till October 14 at the Focus Art Gallery, 359, TTK Road, Alwarpet. For details, call 24986611
