Did you ever expect a curtain to be made of old newspapers? Or did it ever strike you that the upper portion of the water can cap can be used as a candle stand? If you visit the Department of Communication at the Madras Christian College (MCC), you will be surprised to see every household waste like old newspapers and magazines being turned into a new product.

All these are part of this year’s ‘Recycled Creativity’ campaign organised by the department as part of the tenth edition of their Public Relations Campaign.

Every year, the students come up with different ideas for the campaign and this year it’s ‘Recycled Creativity’.

T Divya, one of the organisers of the campaign said, “The campaign is aimed at rekindling the concept of waste recycling. It will also impart necessary skills to the underprivileged sections of society and help them with a source of income.”

“We will be taking this campaign to three schools   for the underprivileged — Balar Kalvi Nilayam, Vepery; Clarke School for the Deaf, Mylapore; and the Presidency Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Egmore — between October 16 and 18. We will teach them to reuse different types of wastes and turn them into usable products such as plaited file from newspapers and magazines, photo frames from cardboard, pen stand from bottles and tin cans,” she added.  The programme was inaugurated by Animal Husbandry Minister T K M Chinnayya.
