The Pallavaram Municipality will seek the help of the State Fisheries Department to examine the reason for the recent death of a huge quantity of fish at the Kutcheri Malai Kuttai in Old Pallavaram.
Speaking to City Express, S Ramamurthy, Commissioner of Pallavaram Municipality, said that the civic body would like to understand the reason for the death of such a large quantity fish in the abandoned stone quarry on Durgah Road. Even last year, a number of fish were reported dead, he added.
“There is a view that fish might have died owing to the depleting oxygen levels in the lake. However, we are not sure. We would like to have expert opinion,” he said.
Stating that the probe by experts was part of efforts to protect and enhance public health, the civic body top official said that local residents were not allowed to fish or consume other aquatic creatures found in the lake.
“This is an old quarry and is believed to be over 100-feet-deep. This was abandoned a long time ago and since then, local residents use the water for washing clothes. It also helps maintain a good water table in the neighbourhood,” he pointed out.
On October 20, large swarms of dead fish were found floating in the lake which was cleared by the local body. The man-made lake is home to many fish varieties including Kutla, Kendai and Viral.
