Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports on the death of four students who travelled on an MTC bus footboard here, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the government and the transport department to specify what safety measures they intend to take to avoid road accidents in future.

Treating newspaper reports on the accident, which occurred near Kandanchavadi on the Old Mahabalipuram Road on Monday, as a writ petition, Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice K N Basha issued the direction.

Reports said the bus involved in the accident was overcrowded.

Considering the report that one person dies every 10 days while travelling perched on the footboard, the bench said it was high time that the Motor Vehicles Rules were strictly implemented to ensure the safety of those travelling in buses.
