CHENNAI: The computer science and engineering, and electronics and communication engineering programmes of Vellore Institute of Technology University, have been accredited to the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology (ABET), United States.

Consul General of United States, Jennifer Mcintyre, on Wednesday handed over the certificate of accreditation to the chancellor of the university, G Viswanathan.

Speaking at the event, Mcintyre said that one of the great challenges facing United States and India is how to educate the expanding population. She said that while 12 million Indians have been enrolled in universities and colleges, it is worth noting that there are a billion Indians under the age of 25.

VIT Chancellor, G Viswanathan, said that while the economy was rid of the shackles of the ‘licence raj’, education was still stuck with old methods. He said that unlike developed countries where education was university-centric, only 10 per cent of the students in India go to universities, with the rest going to individual colleges. Despite recommendations, few colleges have received autonomous status and this scenario has to change, he added.
