Sales of turkey in Chennai, which was very disappointing till Christmas Eve, saw a steep hike on the day of Christmas satisfying the retailers.

“Till yesterday our turkey sales were too low and we had anticipated that it will remain the same even on Christmas, but fortunately on Christmas we got huge number of customers and we attained 100 per cent sales in spite of increase in rate compared to last year. Sales of live turkeys, which is around `380 per kg against `280 last year stood second to the sales of broiler chicken on Christmas day,” said M Jeevaraj, India Proteins in Injambakkam.

Though, the sales picked up on Christmas, the retailers express that the city people do not prefer turkeys, which is usually considered a traditional dinner on Christmas, like they did a few years ago. People now usually prefer Chicken and not any other meat on Christmas, mostly due to cost factor.

“If we compare today’s turkey sales with the sales of turkey four years ago, it has reduced. It is mainly because this generation is not much aware about the quality of the turkey,” said Karthik, owner of Fresh Farm meats.

Mutton sales, however, remained dismal on Christmas day according to retailers from across the city.
