Former Director General of Police (DGP) P Rajendran died in a private hospital here on Tuesday following a brief illness. He was 65. The 1973 batch IPS officer was undergoing treatment at the hospital’s ICU for a liver ailment. He suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday at 6 am followed by two more at 10:50 and 10:55 am. Doctors declared him dead at 11 am after attempts to resuscitate him failed.
The IPS officer is survived by wife Shantha and sons Vijay, (43) and Arun, (40).
His body was taken to the family’s residence at Farm Garden Road in Akkarai near Sholinganallur where top brass of the state police, including present DGP K Ramanujam paid homage.
Born on December 7, 1947 in Puliangudi, Tirunelveli district, the officer began his career as SP of Ramathapuram West and was elevated to the post of DIG, Civil Supplies CID, Chennai on October 20, 1989.
Rajendran became the IGP of Coastal Security Group, Chennai, on July 3, 1995. He was posted as the ADGP in Vigilance Department of NLC Ltd on May 24, 2000. Later, he served as the Chief Vigilance Officer at MTC. He served as chairman of TN Uniformed Services Recruitment Board before being appointed as the chief of the state police.
