In a bid to improve the clinical services in the intensive care unit, Sri Ramachandra University, Porur will be introducing the highly-thinking robot Chitti at its Neuro Department. Former president, A P J Abdul Kalam, will be inaugurating the new Tele-Robot practice’ facility on Saturday.

This is the joint tele-health development project by Sri Ramachandra University Hospital and Robolytics, USA.

Gary Familian, MD, Robolytics, explained the features and activity of Chitti to mediapersons on the university premises on Friday.

“The teleDroid 2 is a fully autonomous mobile robot incorporated with a fourth generation iPad as its human-to-robot and robot-to-human interface, which enables text and audio to be delivered in 24 languages, including Hindi.’’ said Familian, adding that, it reliably navigated within the areas in which it provided service, locations and utilised alternative routes, if it found any moving or stationary obstacles.

The self-controlled robot had 6 hours of power and works 24X7. If the power is reduced, it is capable of automatically locating the power station and charging itself, he explained.

The robot will be used to monitor the health condition of the patient continuously and send an sms alert or mail with video or snap shot to the consulting doctor, in case it found any serious changes in the health conditions.

The doctors can interact with their patients wherever they are without the help of the paramedical staff. Family members of the patients also get the information about the patients, added Familian. This facility is the first of its kind, claimed J S N Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of the university. It will improve the delivery of healthcare services to rural areas and enable doctors in remote locations to interact with patients in metropolitan areas, he added.

K Selvakumar, HoD, Neurosurgery and Chairman of Telemedicine of the university also participated in the event.
