Commemorating World Environment Day 2013 (June 5), the Consortium for Sanitation Redress (CSR) Healthcare organised a human chain campaign to highlight the need to eliminate the stench emanating from transit stations and eventually do away with transit stations through decentralised processing of solid waste.

Around 150 persons, including actor Yuvan and Mylapore MLA Rajalakshmi, participated in the human chain campaign.

According to a project coordinator, CSR has chalked out a sanitisation programme through advanced management and motivational acumen for effective delivery of a healthy environment. The human chain lays the foundation for effective delivery of clean environment and good health. CSR, along with Mohamed Sathak Trust and Mona Vie strives to educate the masses to take the responsibility to claim their right, she said.

A survey conducted by CSR found that more than 31 per cent of the children in areas around the transit stations have learning disabilities/ADHD/behavioural issues, besides the prevalence of air-borne diseases, thanks to the pollution from transit stations. “CSR is taking up a pilot project, adopting a ward for decentralised solid waste management and subsequently extending to other wards to respond to every citizen’s cry – MY RIGHT – environment, health, education,” the coordinator said.

The system is bound to bring about change to our garbage disposing system. If the system is implemented, in about three to four years the garbage dumping at the transfer station and at the main site will be drastically reduced.
