A woman police constable jumped from the second floor of the police quarters in Pudupet Monday morning, after a fellow woman constable allegedly censured her. Her family members and colleagues rushed her to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where she underwent a surgery. She is under observation, doctors said.
Shanti (21), who works in the city division of the Armed Reserve Police Force, has been in the force for the past two years, sources said. Her colleague Kavita Rani, another constable, allegedly censured her in public around 3 pm on Sunday when the two were on duty at Marina Beach.
“Kavita Rani scolded her, much to her depression,” said Premalatha, Shanti’s elder sister.
Shanti had reportedly complained about it to a head constable and a Sub-Inspector of her section, but in vain. “Around 5.30 pm on Sunday, my sister had told the head constable and later the Sub-Inspector, about the incident. But, they just warned my sister and Kavita Rani and let the latter walk away,” she said.
“Shanti got dejected and came home crying. She kept crying all night long. Owing to this depression, she could have attempted suicide,” rued Premalatha.
Doctors said that Shanti underwent a surgery to correct her skull depression. She landed on her hands during the fall and suffered multiple fractures in her wrist and forearms of both hands. She also sustained a skull injury. “An 8-member team performed a surgery on her to set right her skull depression at the right frontal and right temporal lobes. She also has liver injury and swelling in the eye. We will keep her in the hospital for at least 3 to 5 days,” Dr V Kanagasabai, Dean of the Rajiv Gandhi GH told Express.
Family members and colleagues are now gathered in hospital, awaiting Shanti’s recovery. They said that they are unhappy about no official coming to check on Shanti as of Monday evening.
Meanwhile, Egmore Police Inspector Gunavarman said that the duo had been having differences and used to quarrel with each other often. However, he said he was not aware of the reason behind their fight on Sunday which spurred the suicide bid. He further said a sub-inspector had been sent to the hospital to look into the matter.
