The recent murder case of a 42-year-old man, whose body was butchered into pieces, was cracked in just 10 days. However, another sensational case, in which a trunk containing a torso reached the Central Railway Station by train, still remains unsolved.

The headless body of an unidentified person, stuffed in a trunk was recovered from an unreserved compartment in the Grand Trunk Express in March last year.

The case was initially handled by the Government Railway Police (GRP), but was transferred to the Chennai City Police later, claim police sources.

“We tried our level best to solve the case after making inquiries in different parts of the country. But no breakthrough was achieved,” a GRP official told  City Express.

From the clothes on the body, it was revealed that the dead person had an Andhra connection. An investigation team reached the neighbouring State, after completing their investigations in New Delhi, Agra, Nagpur and Warangal railway stations – the places covered by the Grand Trunk Express enroute New Delhi to Chennai Central.

“We conducted inquiries with trunk manufacturers in New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Besides, we attempted to get some clues with his clothes in Tirupur,” the official said.

Finally, the GRP sleuths camped in Vijayawada, following reliable clues.

Investigations also revealed that special squads of Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs), who generally inspect the unreserved compartment during the course of journey, did not enter the coach on that fateful day.

“Though this is not a vital clue, they could have thrown some piece of information that might have helped to crack the case faster,” said one of the investigating officers.

GRP sources said that the case was transferred to the city police in February this year.
