Cops seek Shaji's custody for five days

City Police moved XIV Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore, seeking custody of Empee Group scion Shaji Purushotaman, to find out who gave him asylum and aided him to evade arrest in connection with the Mercedes Benz car accident took place on May 23, which left one dead and four injured, here on Friday.

The petition was filed by the Anna Nagar traffic investigation wing, the day after Shaji was arrested and remanded to Judicial Custody on Thursday. The XIV Metropolitan Magistrate L Abraham Lincoln, before whom the petition came up for hearing, posted the matter to June 17.

“The investigation will be useful in unearthing information, considering the seriousness and gravity of the offence,” the petition submitted. “The initial interrogation period of 24 hours of his arrest was not availed. It is absolutely necessary to interrogate the accused so as to find out who gave him asylum when he was absconding,” the petitions stated.
