The agitation by students on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue intensified here on Tuesday with more numbers taking to a relay fast to highlight their demands.
According to members of the Students Federation for Freedom of Tamil Eelam, seven students at the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University on Greenways Road continued their hunger strike for the second day. The group included a woman student. The protest resulted in a strong contingent of police deployment at the institution, which is in the vicinity of quarters of judges and ministers, they said. Pro-Tamil leaders, including Pazha Nedumaran, called on the protestors and offered their support, they added.
Similarly, students of the Law College near the High Court went on a sudden fast in the evening. Kannaiah, a student, claimed that more than 100 students joined the protest, which he said would be indefinite till the demands are fulfilled.
However, there seemed to be a clear division among the student groups on the primary demand of the protest. While members of the federation said they are against the United States-sponsored resolution, which they alleged was pro-Lanka, the other section in the Law College wanted India to support the resolution.
