The ‘sour sop’ or the fruit from the Graviola tree is a miraculous remedy, which is in high demand among cancer patients. This tropical fruit is attributed to have medicinal properties to heal cancer.
While a flurry of articles is seen on the Internet stating the efficacy of the fruit to heal cancer effectively, some say there is no scientific evidence to show that graviola works as a cure.
However, it is learnt that cancer patients are in search of the fruit that it is even parcelled by growers to places like Bangalore, Chennai and Kochi.
As there are very few growers for this evergreen tree, which is native to South America, Mexico and Caribbean, the fruit is not much available in local markets. It is said that patients are searching for the growers of the tree to order the fruits in advance.
Prof V Anto from Kovaiputhur, who grows a tree at his home, says cancer patients are ready to pay high amount for the fruit.
Graviola is a natural killer of cancer cells. The fruit is more effective to patients who have been detected with first and second stages of cancer. It is 10,000 times effective than undergoing a chemotherapy,” says Anto.
While the fruit is sold at Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per kg by a few growers, Anto is supplying it free of cost to cancer patients.
“I have given the rare fruit to over 20 cancer patients,” Anto added.
