The Madras High Court has pulled up the Regional Board of Film Certification in Chennai for granting U/A certificate to Tamil film Madisar Mami Madana Mama, which contained scenes allegedly denigrating the Brahmin community.

The film, produced by Shilpa Motion Works in Mumbai, depicted the hero, attired in traditional Brahmin style (Panchakatcha) of dhoti, consumed liquor, indulged in sexual acts and danced with a vampire. “Any community, whether its the lowest caste or upper caste, cannot be subject of mockery,” vacation judge N Kirubakaran observed on Monday.

The bench was passing interim orders on a writ petition from TN Brahmin Association filed by its Chennai District President KR Srinivasan, Alwarpet, to cancel the certificate given to the film and consequently restrain producers from screening it for viewing.

The judge, after watching certain portions of the film through Internet, said that though the contents of the entire movie were not known, it appears that the title of the film itself was degrading and denigrating the Brahmins. “Hence, an order for interim injunction is granted. However, it is open to the Censor Board and the producers to change the title of the movie and release it,” the judge added.

The way in which mindless violence and brutality was exhibited, criminal acts and vulgarity and obscenity were justified in many movies, it was very difficult to believe as to whether the Censor Board functioned or not. The judge said and gave a set of 17 guidelines to be followed by the Censor Board and also directed the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry to give a fit response on June 12.
